A question the swimming pool contractors from Advanced Pools, Inc. in Memphis, TN get asked all the time is, “can you swim while you’re pregnant?” While they aren’t medical professionals they have picked up some information during their time in the pool construction field that may answer this question.

No matter what you read there, though, you need to check with your own doctor to get his or her thoughts on whether you are healthy enough to swim while pregnant.

Can you swim while you’re pregnant?

If you’re a pool owner and if you’re pregnant in the heat of summer, you probably don’t want to have to give up the idea of a refreshing swim, right?

What are the benefits of swimming while pregnant? It’s ideal exercise that won’t put any stress on your body or joints; It can take away aches and pains associated with pregnancy; It can help you relax

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise, and that might be even more true during pregnancy. If you’re accustomed to swimming on a regular basis, your doctor may agree that it’s all right for you to continue to do so during your pregnancy.

You may need to modify the swim routine and the amount of time you spend in the pool, but again, ask your doctor.

Why is swimming great?

When you swim, the buoyancy of the water alleviates any stress and strain and makes you feel lighter. Swimming uses all of the large muscle groups in your arms and legs and is a low-impact cardiovascular workout. Swimming also improves circulation, builds endurance and increases muscle tone.

Here is what your doctor might recommend for swimming if you’re pregnant.

In the first trimester you can swim for at least twenty minutes, every other day.
In the second trimester you can swim for the same amount of time — twenty minutes — several days a week.
Swimming in the third trimester, especially if it’s in the heat of summer is a great way to keep your body from overheating. Again, your doctor may recommend the twenty minute limit several days a week.
Make sure that, just as you wouldn’t swim alone any other time, that you always have someone in the pool or in the pool area with you when you’re swimming. Be extra careful getting into and out of the swimming pool when you’re pregnant as your center of gravity will be off.
Talk with your doctor and see if he says it’s all right for you to swim while pregnant!
