Let’s face it. The hot tub and swimming pool cover are exposed to water all of the time. It would stand re reason they might get moldy, right? The swimming pool contractors from Advanced Pools, Inc. in Memphis, Tennessee explain how to get mold off a hot tub cover and/or a swimming pool cover.

You don’t want mold to get into your pool or hot tub water because not only could it impact the water chemistry, but it could also lead to long-term damage of the cover itself.

How to get mold off a hot tub cover

If you’re one of the swimming pool and hot tub owners who are diligent in the use of the hot tub or pool cover, you will likely need to clean mold off more often than someone who isn’t as diligent. That’s a good thing! Even though there is mold, your water is protected, you’re cutting back on water lost through evaporation and you have an easier time cleaning the pool water when you use a cover — those are wins all day!

If, when you’re removing the hot tub or pool cover you notice tiny black or green or even brown specks on the underside of it (the side that hovers above the water) that is probably mold. Don’t wait until the entire cover is covered in mold spores before you take action!

It doesn’t take a lot of time, but it does take a bit of elbow grease to remove the mold, but you will be prolonging the life of your pool or hot tub cover if you’re caring for it properly.

To clean the cover you will need to:

Remove it and lay it flat on the ground. If it’s a hot tub cover with foam cores, remove the foam cores and clean those separately.

Talk with us to make sure you’re using a cleaning agent that won’t damage the cover or upset the water chemistry. You can use a mixture of one gallon of warm water, one teaspoon of mild dish detergent and one cup of bleach. Bleach will dry your hands and can sting, so wear gloves. You may want to also wear protective eyewear.

Use a soft bristle brush or a sponge to clean the mold. Wet the cover with the water/bleach/dish detergent mixture then softly and gently brush off the mold spores.

Once you’ve removed the mold from the cover, spray it with a hose to remove the mold and to thoroughly wash away the cleaning mixture.

You may want to let the cover dry thoroughly then spray it again with the hose to be sure the cleaning solution is thoroughly removed before you use the cover again.

If this is the winter cover you’re cleaning, dry it completely before you fold it up and store it for the summer. Don’t let mold grow during the summer months as this could destroy the cover.
