Memphis, Tennessee swimming pool contractors offer cat safety tips for pool owners

We talk with our swimming pool customers on a regular basis on how to keep their dogs safe in and around the swimming pool. We know that our pool customers are also cat owners and cat lovers and that prompted us to share our safety tips for cat owners who also have a swimming pool. The tips aren’t much different from those for dog owners, but because cats are so much more curious, there is perhaps more of a chance they would fall into the pool. Consider too if your cat, or a neighborhood cat, is chasing something something through the yard and is not paying attention he could easily fall into a swimming pool.

Here are the best tips we have to offer our Memphis, Tennessee swimming pool customers on cat and pool safety:

  • Outdoor or feral cats who may not have access to clean water may be drawn to the swimming pool and drink from it. The chemicals in the water could make them ill. If you see cats roaming around, put some fresh bowls of water in the yard to keep them away from the pool water.
  • If your cats start acting oddly, it could be the signs of heatstroke. The signs include restlessness, lethargy, excessive drooling and difficulty breathing.
  • Clean your cat’s ears if he falls into the water. Use soft cotton balls to do this. Water in their ears could lead to infection.
  • Pet owners should install a ramp in the swimming pool and teach your pets where the ramp is and how to use it. Even if you have a swimming pool fence, there is always a possibility your pet could have access to the pool when you’re not around. Ask us about the pet safety devices we offer our clients.
  • Not all pets know how to swim. Some cats and dogs will either sink like a rock or be so panicked that they will have a hard time staying afloat. Even if your pet can swim, it might not be a bad idea to equip him with a life jacket to help keep him safe.
  • Use a pool safety cover. Make certain the cover fits snugly so that a pet can’t slip underneath it. Talk with us about the best type of swimming pool safety cover for your family’s unique needs.

Talk with your pool contractor the next time he comes to pay a service visit in case you have pets and weren’t aware of some of these safety measures for pet owners.
