Swimming pool covers are your best protection and barrier against dirt and debris falling into the water. If you have ever wondered, what are the benefits of a pool skimmer? The pool contractors from Advanced Pools, Inc. explain they take away some of the worry about a dirty pool.

A swimming pool skimmer floats on the surface of the pool water and skims along capturing floating debris before it has a chance to fall to the bottom of the pool. Organic matter that falls to the bottom of the pool can turn into algae, discolor the water and upset the pool water chemistry.

Swimming pool skimmers are typically built into the upper side of the pool and use the suction of the pool pump to draw in debris, trap it and send it into the filter or skimmer basket. The skimmer basket is easily accessible through a hatch on the pool deck.

Skimmers “skate” across the top of the pool water — much like a hands-free vacuum in your house does.

What are the benefits of a pool skimmer?

If you’re going to have a skimmer installed make certain it can reach up to 500 square feet as this is the best size to keep the surface of the water clean. Don’t forget to clean the skimmer basket regularly — daily — to prevent there being any strain on the swimming pool pump.

Robotic pool skimmers can operate essentially without human intervention. You can turn it on and forget it or some can be programmed to turn on and off at specified times. When you use a robotic swimming pool cleaner you’re cutting back on the amount of hands-on time for skimming the pool and you just might see lower pool service costs because the pool is cleaner.
