Are you a first time swimming pool owner? Have you been a pool owner for a while, but have left the pool maintenance up to a pool contractor? No matter where you are in the pool ownership path, you may wonder what pool equipment is important? This changes for many people based on whether they have a pool service contractor do all maintenance or whether you are a do it yourselfer with pool maintenance.

The pool contractors from Advanced Pool Care share information on items you may want to purchase and have on hand — for a variety of reasons. Ask your pool contractor for advice or if there are other items you can add to this list or items you don’t need to worry about.

What pool equipment is important?

  • The pool filter is the heart of the pool. This needs to be kept running in tip top condition to filter out any impurities and bacteria from the water. You will have made the decision on the type of pool filter when you invested in your pool, but you may want to keep additional filters on hand for those times when your pool contractor backwashes the filter.
  • Manual or automatic vacuum. Even if you work with a pool contractor you may need to/want to vacuum the pool between service visits. If you have an automatic cleaner, this is like the in-home auto vacuums where you simply put it in the pool and it performs its task. If you’re using a manual pool cleaner you will need to put in a bit more, well, manual effort.
  • Pool chemicals. If you work with a pool contractor, you won’t have to buy and store pool chemicals. If you’re a do it yourselfer, ask your pool contractor what chemicals you should buy and where you should store them for safety’s sake.
  • Pool water test kit. Even if you work with a pool contractor you will want to test the water on occasion — especially if you’ve just had a party or if there has been a significant rainfall that may have upset the water chemistry. The kits measure pH, total alkalinity, chlorine levels, calcium hardness levels and others; ask us how to interpret the test kit readings.
  • A pool cover. This should be considered a must have accessory when you have your pool constructed. There are various types of covers and it’s up to you to be diligent in its use. A pool cover is a piece of safety equipment and will keep the pool water cleaner longer.
  • Ask us what equipment you may need to have on hand, whether the equipment you have is working correctly and any other pool related questions you have. We are your go-to source for all things swimming pool in Memphis, Tennessee!
