When you have a natural pool the water is contained in a membrane rather than a fiberglass or plastic shell. No chemicals or sterilization or disinfecting devices are used. A natural pond keeps itself clean through the motion of the water and through the use of biologiical filters and 
plants which are rooted hydroponically into the biological filter system. What makes a pool “natural” is the filtration system is one found in the natural world – plants and motion — not chemicals.

What should you consider if you want a natural pool?
- Where will you place it. You’re placing a large body of water and you don’t want it to become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Place it away from trees or woods – as these are places that attract mosquitoes. Look for a level area in which to place it, unless you want to tear up the yard for the landscaping for the natural pool.
- What size do you want. Because the water will be “naturally landscaped,” it could become home to migrating birds! A pool that is about five feet deep could be a lure to migratory birds. Also, the bigger the pool the more it will cost to construct and invest in plants for.
- Even natural pools require a pump or pool filter: The water needs to flow naturally – by connecting it to a stream, for example. Stagnant water will attract bugs, mosquitoes and frogs and become weed-choked. The water filter is necessary because it keeps the water clean.
- Ease of access to a water source: Evaporation is a natural part of pool ownership but many individuals locate their natural pools in the far recesses of their yards, not near a water source. Plan to have a hose available for occasional refills.
After you’ve researched and talked with your pool contractor and have determined that a natural pool is what you and your family want, decide on your budget, where it will be placed and invest in the membrane to hold the water. After that it’s a matter of adding water and adding in the plants that will keep the water clean and clear.
You will need to decide if you want a deck or other outdoor living space to surround your natural pool or whether you want to keep the area truly natural and perhaps bring in some rock benches for seating areas.
