Easy ways to upgrade your pool landscaping
When you commit to potted plants you will need to care for them, weed them and water them to keep them healthy and blooming.
- Water. Knowing when to water is key. Don’t overwater. Don’t underwater. Trust your instincts when it comes to watering, or ask a gardening pro for advice. Make note of the type of plants you are growing and read the seed packet or ask for advice on watering frequency.
- Water tips. Don’t soak the plant to the extent the water erodes the dirt away from the roots. Use a sprayer bath for the plants to clean off the leaves and gently wet the soil. Water before the sun gets too high in the sky or water at dusk.
- Water run off. Plants need a place for the excess water to drain – either when you’re watering or when it rains. A pot with holes in the bottom are ideal. Place small stones in the bottom of the pot to help with drainage. If roots grow out the bottom of the planter, it’s time to repot.
The proper water level. If you overwater plants there will be standing water. The roots will brown and the soil will smell. If the leaves are turning brown or yellow or falling off, chances are it’s from overwatering.
When you underwater the plant will wither and no new leaves form. If the leaves are curled and brown, it’s time to water. If the dirt in the pot is dry and crumbling, you are underwatering. Step up the watering game to try and save plants, but do so slowly as you don’t want to overwater.
Potted plants add to the beauty of your swimming pool area without the worry of planting trees whose roots may damage your pool plumbing. Decorate your plants for the season and move them indoors to help them survive the winter months.
