Pregnant women are generally given the green light by their physicians to remain active during their pregnancy. Staying active will help you deal with weight gain and will probably help with your delivery when the baby is due. If you have access to a swimming pool in your own back yard, you have an ideal space for exercising and staying in shape during pregnancy without putting any stress or strain on your muscles or bones or joints. Is swimming safe if you’re pregnant?

Is swimming safe if you’re pregnant?

That is a question that you will need to ask your physician before you begin, here are some reasons that swimming might be beneficial for a pregnant lady:

  • As mentioned, swimming makes you buoyant and this means you won’t be putting any additional pressure on bones or joints and this is ideal when you’re pregnantred eyes from pool
  • If you remain active during your pregnancy, labor and delivery might be easier
  • If you stay in shape during your pregnancy you may have an easier time getting back to your “pre baby weight”
  • Having a workout that builds your cardio and lung capacity might keep your blood pressure down

Spending time in the swimming pool is a great activity for the entire family. As long as your doctor agrees, there is no reason you have to give up swim time during pregnancy. If your pool has a beach entry that will make it easier to get in and out of the pool. If you don’t ask a family member to watch you get in and out so you don’t take a tumble because your center of gravity is impacted by your pregnancy weight.

Swimming laps isn’t the point of being in the pool. Enjoy a leisurely swim or play games with the children. Any activity in the pool is ideal because the water provides resistance with every swim stroke you make. When you spend time in the water you will likely feel a relaxation that you just don’t get on land. Pregnancy, while a beautiful time, can also be stressful. Finding ways to relax and unwind could be just what the doctor ordered!  Swimming and light movement might just alleviate morning sickness.

If your doctor approves, you may be able to swim throughout the pregnancy. You may want to be more consistent in showering after you get out of the pool to remove any pool chemicals. Remember, never swim alone. That’s just good advice for anyone anytime they are in a pool!
