Keep worms out of the swimming pool
Worms may ot be welcome visitors to your swimming pool, but they are beneficial for your yard and your garden. If you want to have beautiful landscaping you can make the yard welcoming for the worms without luring them into the swimming pool with the family. For the most part, worms will avoid the pool, but they do like water and if the pool water is warmer than the outside temperature they may be drawn to its warmth in the midst of a cool summer evening.
Keep them away from the pool because if they fall in, they won’t be able to get out so you will find them floating on the surface or stuck in the skimmer.
Here are ways to keep them out of your pool
- Be diligent in the use of the pool cover. If you use a cover, they may crawl onto that, but they won’t fall into the water.
- Check the deck and pool water following a storm. If you’re at work and the cover isn’t on, the worms will come out (and fall into your pool) following a storm. Clean the deck if you find a lot of worms around — just to make it more sanitary.
- If you have plants and landscaping around the pool and the pool deck you will have worms. Try to keep any dirt about twenty feet from the pool and deck and this will give the worms a longer way to travel to get into your pool.
- If you haven’t already had your pool deck constructed, consider an elevated deck. Worms aren’t great climbers so if it’s harder for them to get onto the deck it will be easier to keep them out of the water. Even a thicker slab of concrete may deter worms.
- Add some crushed limestone around the pool’s concrete deck. The limestone may raise the pH of the soil around the pool and worms aren’t drawn to soil that is high in pH. Be aware, though if it rains and the limestone runs into the pool water it can upset the water chemistry.
