You surely know that swimming pools aren’t a modern invention. They have been around since ancient times — in fact, it’s believed that Romans invented the first heated pool that was enjoyed by the royalty of the time. A heated pool in Ancient Roman times? Yes. Here’s how: pools were built on pillars with a chamber beneath that held space for a fire to be built and stoked to heat the water. That makes today’s heated pool system easier to appreciate — just flip a switch and viola warm water!
Interesting Swimming Pool FAQs
Swimming pools were few and far between in ancient civilizations because they were expensive and difficult to construct. They didn’t grace every temple because prior to the invention of mechanical excavation equipment, pools were dug by hand with picks and shovels. It was a tedious and slow process and the cost was so prohibitive that only the truly wealthy had the money to afford one.
After the pool was dug, another problem was the puritanical social codes of exposing skin in public. In the 1800s, swimming suits had to completely cover a person’s body — neck to ankles! Even if you found the right suit there were swim strokes that were banned. The “crawl” for example, was forbidden because it was considered “rough, impolite and crude.”
Swimmers were allowed to do the breaststroke but had to kick sideways only – spread legs were not allowed. American Indians are credited with introducing swimming for pleasure to the inhabitants of the New World and travelers from the New World back to England carried the freestyle swim with them.
